D-Link DWL-120 11 Mbps Wireless USB Network Adapter Review

Designed for desktop PCs and laptops with a USB port, the D-Link DWL-120 can be used point to point (ad hoc) or in conjunction with an access point (infrastructure mode) to extend the reach of its communications capability. Strict adherence to the latest IEEE 802.11b networking standard for wireless connections and USB standards makes the DWL-120 compatible with any compliant hardware. The network adapter is fully mobile and seamlessly roams from access point to access point. The range of coverage per cell is 100 meters indoors and up to 300 meters outdoors.
The DWL-120 operates in 2.4 GHz direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) for wireless networks in the home or office. It also uses a 40-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption for a secure network connection. It includes an internal nondetachable diversity patch antenna and one built-in green LED indicator for power, network link, and activity. The DWL-120 is compatible with Windows 98 and Me; Windows 2000 compatibility is expected by late 2001.
D-Link provides a lifetime warranty on parts and labor for the DWL-120. The D-Link DWL-120 is an IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN USB adapter. The DWL-120 will operate in 2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) for wireless networks in the home or office environment. In addition, the DWL-120 uses a 40-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) Encryption for a secure network connection. The D-Link DWL-120 can operate in either Ad-Hoc mode (Peer-to-Peer networking without access point) or Infrastructure mode (Peer-to-Peer networking using an access point). In Infrastructure mode, the DWL-120 can be connected to a wireless broadband residential gateway for high-speed wireless Internet access on the existing local network. The DWL-120 data range is 11, 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps per channel. The DWL-120 transmit rate values can be manually selected for Auto Select 1 or 2 Mbps, Fixed 1 Mbps, Fixed 11 Mbps, Fixed 2 Mbps, Fixed 5.5 Mbps and Fully Auto. The DWL-120 has full mobility and seamless roaming from cell to cell as well as across access points.

* Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11g and draft 802.11n specifications. Actual data throughput will vary. Network conditions and environmental factors, including volume of network traffic, buildings materials and construction, and network overhead, lower actual data throughput rate. Environmental factors will adversely affect wireless signal range. Wireless range and speed rates are D-Link RELATIVE performance measurements based on the wireless range and speed rates of a standard Wireless G product from D-Link. Maximum throughput based on D-Link draft 802.11n devices.
** Requires SharePort Client Utility installation on the PC. SharePort upgrade is available for the hardware versions A2, A3, A4.
